Partnership Garden Builds

For a number of years live civilly, inc. and Habitat for Humanity of Burlington County have enjoyed a relationship which introduces youth under the age of 16 to the foundation of Habitat for Humanity.  The “people helping people” motto which ties individuals, organizations and communities together has been the primary focus of this relationship.

This year marks the first hands on working opportunity for youth under 16 to participate on a Habitat for Humanity home to youth under the age of 16.  The live civilly, inc. – Habitat for Humanity Partnership Gardens are a tenant of both live civilly, inc.‘s and Habitat’s mission.  As part of an on-going relationship with Habitat for Humanity, live civilly, inc. provides Habitat Home Garden Builds for youth and families.  Habitat for Humanity of Burlington County is part of a larger, international organization.  Their Mission states: “Putting faith into action, Habitat for Humanity Burlington County partners with families in need and volunteers to transform lives through decent and affordable home ownership.”  In an effort to further build upon the collaborative efforts of live civilly, inc. and Habitat for Humanity, live civilly, inc. offers youth and families “Habitat Home Garden Builds.”  Habitat for Humanity families and live civilly, inc. volunteers work side by side to help Habitat for Humanity families further improve their new homes by building vegetable gardens.  Our first Habitat Home Garden Builds will be in June 2014.

Habitat for Humanity

How does this work? live civilly, inc. provides working parties comprised of youth and families who will visit a recently completed Habitat for Humanity and build a modest vegetable garden with the new owners.  All garden builds will take place within Burlington County.  The two current sites are located in Riverton and Mt. Holly.  Volunteers will meet live civilly, inc. representatives at the home site prepared to build a garden with the new homeowners.  Youth as young as five can participate in the garden building process from creating garden beds with wood, drills and hammers to filling the gardens and helping home owners plant vegetables to help offset their food needs.

Youth will work side by side Habitat Home Owners while live civilly, inc. representatives use construction saws to create the planks for the garden beds.  Raw planks will be screwed together to create custom garden beds for home owners.  Garden beds will then be filled with garden soils and prepared to receive

Additionally,  live civilly, inc. will provide a brief tutorial and “how to garden” lecture to those families interested.  Youth and their families are invited to participate in all aspects of the build.  These partnerships are designed to engage young people in active community service as well as introduce people to the wonderful service opportunities offered by Habitat for Humanity.
