LIVE CIVILLY COMMUNITY SUPPORTED GARDEN INITIATIVES

Join live civilly, inc. for the second summer of Community Supported Garden Volunteer Opportunities!  This summer, live civilly, inc. not only returns to the Community Gardens on Camden Avenue, but also is working with the Moorestown Upper Elementary School.  This spring, live civilly, inc. and two UES Fourth Grade classes constructed a brand new teaching garden.  These two locations offer youth groups, individuals and families the opportunity to take part in an initiative that ultimately feeds local families and helps to  provide fresh, nutritional stability to many in our community.  All proceeds of both gardens currently benefit local food outreach initiatives.

The live civilly, inc. Community Supported Gardens are entering their second year, in which local gardening plots are planted and tended so that proceeds from the garden are directed to local families who visit one of three local Food Pantries.  Live Civilly has partnered with the live civilly, inc./Ministerium Food Pantry, the Bethel AME Food Pantry and the First Baptist Food Pantry to help bring fresh produce to the population served at each.

Each week, volunteers visit live civilly, inc. Community Supported Gardens and care for the plots.  One day weekly, volunteers harvest the gardens and direct the fresh vegetables to each pantry.  This year, lettuces are in abundance as are green beans, peas and herbs, and soon tomatoes, cucumbers and squash will be jumping off the vines!

live civilly, inc. volunteers are greeted by Garden Coordinator, Toni Farmer, and given a brief, yet thorough, overview of garden care.  Additionally, a checklist is provided that details the duties of each volunteer group.  From watering and weeding to harvesting and pruning, volunteers are led step by step in a mini gardening lesson on their first trip to the garden.  Support information and emergency numbers are provided to each volunteer so that any questions can be answered easily and quickly.

Last year, nearly one dozen families volunteered for this effort.  This is what some had to say:

“Our family volunteered and learned so much about gardening!  We liked it so much we started our own!”

“I was really nervous at first, but live civilly, inc.y made it so easy, that even my three year old was able to take part!”

“We tried it out in early July and had so much fun we signed up again in August!”

“The most amazing part was delivering to the food pantry, and seeing the look on the volunteers and patrons faces!”

This year there are two locations to choose from and volunteers are welcomed to sign up for one or both locations!  The Camden Avenue gardens are located just west of the Perkins Center buildings in the Moorestown Garden Club’s Community Garden.  The plots are clearly defined and always in need of caretakers!  This location is an easy walk from most areas in town and water hoses are easily accessible.

The live civilly, inc. Partnership Garden at the Moorestown Upper Elementary School is located in an interior garden at the school.  Since the school building is open all summer long, the garden is easily accessible by visiting the school during office hours (8:30-3:00).  This garden will be used and shared by Fourth Grade teachers, Mrs. Kelly and Mr. O’Brien whose classes piloted the program during the 2013-14 school year.  Mrs. Kelly and Mr. O’Brien will be running summer enrichment courses out of the garden and live civilly, inc. volunteers will be able to assist this effort during “non-enrichment” times.

Please, take a week to enroll your family, your neighbors, or any group of youths in this effort to help feed families in our community.  For more information please email contact@livecivilly.org or visit our Volunteer Page and sign up today!
